We are pleased to announce our latest revision to our panhard bar assembly for vintage Mustangs. Newly redesigned, the latest evolution of our Panhard Rod is now lighter, easier to run exhaust through, and offers improved serviceability. Existing panhard orders and kits or packages including panhards will receive the latest design, now available in our store. We are still updating pictures, but all new orders will be this new design.

After listening to our customers and installing quite a few of the previous generation ourselves, we set out to reengineer our panhard to address several challenges our customers were facing, all while building in our ideas for better fit, finish, and performance.

Reduced Weight

By omitting the flat steel across the center section and replacing it with a lighter, but equally rigid bar, we’re able to dramatically reduce the weight of the complete setup. We drew inspiration from our first generation panhard (as seen in the video) but replaced the elements that often required significant manual adjustments for a perfect weld. This allows us to drop the weight and keep the precision we developed with our second generation design.

More Room for Exhaust

We developed the second generation panhard with exhaust in mind, cutting out sections and encouraging exhaust routing but it still meant space was at a premium. Our revised design frees up significantly more room for exhaust tubing, making it easier for you to run exhaust all the way out behind the car instead of dumping it in front of the axle. It also frees up room around the fuel pump mount on the gas tank, making it easier to run fuel line(s).

Improved Serviceability

Our second generation was effectively a single piece of steel welded into the rear chassis. Once there, it wasn’t coming out. Our new design instead offers a rigidly mounted, bolt in bar that spans the gap between the two welded in plates. This makes is much easier to drop a tail pipe, replace a fuel pump/float level, or access any of the other components adjacent to the panhard bar.

At MMI we’ve spent a lot of time trying to make sense of this stupid simple part. When a ball joint works well, you won’t notice it. But even a little wiggle can cause your car to feel inconsistent and jumpy, especially at highway speeds. In building our suspensions, we’ve discovered ball joints are extremely inconsistent from batch-to-batch, and even from ball joint-to-ball joint. So how do we make them better? Let Mike walk you through some of what he’s discovered about ball joints and what MMI has been doing to improve the feel and performance of this lowly part.
