An upgrade from our MOD kit, the MOD 1 Complete Brake Kit brings enhanced on-track capabilities to your Mustang. We swap the Dynapro Caliper for its bigger brother, the Wilwood Superlite 6R which delivers improved cooling and a larger brake area for reliable performance both on and off the track and include Wilwood’s D154 Rear Calipers for four corner disc braking.

FNSL6R billet Forged six-piston calipers with 13”-14” rotors deliver the ultimate combination for braking power and style in this group of kits engineered for traditional non-ABS spindles on American muscle cars and vintage rods. Built exclusively for 17” and larger wheels, SL6 kits enhance tire and suspension upgrades on all types of custom show and high performance dual-purpose street and track machines. A full range of options for caliper finishes and rotor designs are guaranteed to catch the eye of the most discriminating enthusiast while providing optimized brake performance for every individual application.

Though we’re big fans of drum brakes in the rear, we understand that rear discs brings some advantages, especially in track scenarios. But there’s a reason we like the stock brakes: the rear axle flexes. It flexes a lot. I don’t care if you have a Currie unit from a Sherman tank, the rear axles will flex. This has the effect of pushing the rotors (which are mounted to the axles) around within the caliper. So instead of having the pads gently riding the rotor, there’s a gap. This gap has to be filled when pushing the brake, which makes the whole system feel inconsistent and scary.

So what do guys do? They buy a bigger master (which moves more fluid at a lower pressure, resulting in even worse brake feel), they back it up with a brake booster (don’t get me started) and then they start asking about firewall reinforcements because they have to put so much effort into the brake pedal.

We want to use discs in the rear, so how do we overcome this problem? We opt for a floating caliper like the one found in the Wilwood D154 setup. The floating caliper effectively moves with the rear, minimizing the air gap that’s naturally created. Frankly, it’s the only rear setup we really like.

Wilwood’s D154 Rear Caliper Kit offers a direct bolt-on 2-piston replacement with a floating caliper design, helping to minimize pad knock back and improve brake feel. Forged billet aluminum bodies, stainless steel pistons, and competition style high-temperature seals put an end to the rust, bore pitting, and seal failures that plague the OE caliper design. D154 calipers provide low-maintenance performance and a huge weight savings with high temperature reliability for the street and track. D52 calipers mount in the stock location over stock rotors; use the original style OE D154 brake pads and an OE M10-1.5 banjo bolt brake line mounting. Calipers can be used with most wheels that clear the OE calipers.

We also include a set of our big pin spindles in this kit. It’s a worthwhile upgrade that helps to ensure a solid foundation for your new braking system. This kit comes with DRP Hub Bearing Spacers as well, a small but significant addition.

For pads, we include Wilwood’s BP-20, which provides increased friction levels with extended temperature range over BP-10. BP-20 has a progressive response rate as pedal pressure and temperatures increase to provide confident, repeated stops and outstanding modulation characteristics. The unique metallic composite formulation provides an aggressive feel without the harsh noise, high rotor abrasion, and extreme dust levels associated with high metallic based compounds.

Based on years of firsthand experience, we’ve found this combination of parts to deliver the feel most customers are looking for on the street and autocross (with seldom track use). Included is a set of Wilwood Dynapro 6 piston calipers and rotors, a set of Wilwood D154 calipers and rotors, our big pin spindles, stainless front brake lines, and a 15/16″ Wilwood tandem master cylinder and proportioning valve specific to early Mustangs.

If you heard “6-piston” and immediately thought race car, you’re not alone. But we don’t recommend this caliper because “race car”, rather the simple fact that six pistons help to maximize brake pad longevity and reduce heat. It’s that simple. We also include a set of our big pin spindles in this kit. It’s a worthwhile upgrade that helps to ensure a solid foundation for your new braking system. If you’re looking for a proper upgrade to your early Mustang’s braking system and want to skip the guesswork, MOD Complete is the way to go for a complete system upgrade.

It's the combination of parts that we've beat on weekend after weekend at events like Optima, Goodguys, GridLife, and too many track days to count. We've spent more than a decade developing, designing, and refining this package.

APEX PACKAGE

This Takes a Special Kind of Crazy

FRONT SUSPENSION

We start the Apex setup with our MOD 2 Front Suspension Kit.

Make no mistake, the install is involved, but the improved performance is worth it. We start by removing the original shock towers and replacing them with our MOD 2 designs built to create maximum space in the engine bay while maintaining the strength Ford designers originally intended. Constructed out of thicker gauge metal than similar kits, these are designed to keep the shock mounted much higher (and closer to the original location) to enhance overall shock travel, resulting in better suspension geometry and performance.

We then replace the lower control arm mount with a new design that locates it in the most effective position and helps to tie the rest of the kit together. As fans of adjustability, we installed our keyed mounting points, offering you the ability to raise or lower the mount for the lower control arm resulting in improved alignment specs. Keeping the longest control arms possible combined with vertical control arm mounting adjustability ensures that you will have the best combination possible. Of course we built in our preferred JRi Racing shocks (with your choice of adjustability and Hyperco springs.

Tying the shock towers and lower control arm mounts together you’ll find a tubular crossmember designed to clear a front sump Coyote oil pan like those from Canton or Moroso.

REAR SUSPENSION

Originally designed to cruise on the street then destroy at the track, this suspension has seen years of refinement and development. Comprised of several components, this kit most notably moves the coilover from under the body up into the trunk using a cantilever-type setup more typically found on Formula 1 cars. Not only is this generally badass, but it allows us to run a full size coilover without worrying about packaging it under the car.

We’ve also designed this package to be minimally invasive, requiring only a small amount of cutting (a couple inches) to your trunk floor and the boxing of about an inch of your rear frame rails on either side. Try that with any of those other kits on the market.

In short, this kit offers classic Mustang owners an incredibly balanced, strong, tune-able system that’s as comfortable on the street as it is on the track. We’ve installed this kit in countless cars and made several refinements over the years and it continues to be a defining suspension for us at MMI.

POWER STEERING

If you’ve ever tried parking one of these cars without power steering, you know just how essential it is. But finding the right combination of pieces is a daunting task. Our focus started with the proper steering geometry, a bunch of math that helps tell us engineers how natural the steering is going to feel. After all, it shouldn’t take 13 turns of the wheel to turn a corner, nor should it take half a turn to make a u-turn.

So we start by replacing the steering box with a high quality ABS unit with a 14:1 ratio. We back that up with a KRC Power Steering pump, the likes of which can be found on everything from street rods to race cars. From there we source quality replacement components: center link, tie rod adjusters, and inner and outer tie rods. Again, focusing on the best stock replacements we can find, not the ones from the discount bin.

So why not go with a typical rack-and-pinion type setup so common these days? It all has to do with steering geometry, or the math behind why your car feels twitchy and unpredictable instead of solid and confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, feel often takes a backseat to packaging constraints (and consumers who say “I want that” without really being sure why). What everyone seems to be missing is that most rack and pinion systems actually make the original steering geometry worse. If you’re looking to drop a Coyote in, we offer a Coyote specific pump and reservoir that’s works extremely well with this setup.

    • MOD 1 Power Steering Kit (Engine Specific)
    • Replacement Centerlink
    • Replacement Tie Rod Adjusters
    • Replacement Tie Rods (Inner and Outer)

BRAKES

For brakes we start with our MOD 1 Front Brake Kit and add on our MOD 2 Rear Brake kit. Up front you’ll get a pair of 6 piston Wilwood Superlite 6 calipers over massive rotors (18″ wheels highly suggested). Of course we’ll want to mount those wheels on a set of our big pin spindles for improved strength and so that we can include a set of DRP Bearing Spacers.

With our setup in the back offering a full floating rear end, we’re able to run a Dynapro 6 caliper and rotor setup. Furthermore we’ll weld on the necessary brackets on your housing, then run brake hard lines to meet the stainless flexible lines for you. That means your rear end comes with all the necessary hardware to plumb and install it, saving you the guesswork and time.

This package is our most involved install, but it can be done on a painted car. If you are not comfortable welding, fabricating, and working on your own brakes, we’d highly recommend you leave this to the professionals.

You will need to remove your stock shock towers and weld in our replacements. You’ll be doing a fair amount of welding, but fortunately the shock towers and small section of the rear floor are all that will need to be cut. Brackets are welded to both the front and rear frame rails that act as mounting points for various parts of the suspension.

Also of note…

First, we don’t currently offer a shock tower brace to complement our MOD 2 Front Suspension. Frankly we’ve seen so many unique engine options installed that we haven’t had a big enough sample size to create an off-the-shelf piece. However, this is on our radar.

Second, we don’t currently offer any header options. MOD 2 is designed to offer a fair amount of room, but those Coyote engines are big, especially in the 64-66 engine bay. Custom headers will need to be fabricated for that application and likely for others as well.

Third, this package does not include a rear diff as standard, but it is an option. We’d recommend the N-Series from GearFX.

FRONT SUSPENSION

Up front we call in our MOD 1 Front Suspension Kit, a complete kit that replaces the stock upper and lower control arms, strut rods, shocks, sway bar, and bushings but doesn’t reengineer it. Look, Ford was on the right track with the original design, but it’s been 50 years and we’ve learned a lot.

For instance, caster. Caster is essentially the alignment angle of the upper and lower balljoint (it’s more complicated than that, but let’s keep things simple). In the 60s no one thought it was that important, so they set up a degree or two. Today, we know that the sweet spot is 6-7 degrees to minimize darting on the highway and improve high speed stability. That’s why we’ve engineered our upper arms to be offset, increasing base caster to fit in with our modern demands.

On the camber front, we offer a redesigned lower control arm with an adjustable heim joint. This allows you to easily dial in your preferred camber while also giving us a new way to attached our solid mount strut rods (which are also adjustable).

Are you sensing a trend here? The goal with our MOD 1 Front Suspension is to not only improve everything about the front of the car, but also to give you a level of adjustability that the old suspension simply could not offer. Combine this with an alignment from a shop that actually knows what they’re doing and you’ll feel a tighter, more responsive front end that’s point and shoot.

REAR SUSPENSION

Originally designed to cruise on the street then destroy at the track, this suspension has seen years of refinement and development. Most of this kit can be installed in a garage with typical hand tools. Many of the parts are fairly easier to swap in and out. Some, like the steering, will require you to remove other parts before accessing the ones to be replaced. We recommend professional installation if you are uncomfortable with the idea of replacing your brakes and steering systems.

Welding will be required to install the MOD 2 rear (both brackets and the panhard bar bracket) plus the subframe connectors.

This package will require the adaptation of your current brake lines to your new master cylinder.

Be VERY careful when removing and installing new springs. They hurt, ask us how we know.

Bearing spacers are a significant upgrade that improves wheel spin by over 1200% while improving the longevity of your wheel bearings. When properly installed they will provide an immediate increase in hub free spin, an improvement large enough to feel just by pushing the car around.

And the benefit doesn’t stop there.  Bearing spacers make the most difference when a side load (cornering force), is applied.  Drivers have commented on how much faster a car with bearing spacers free rolls when entering and through the center of the corner.

Bearing spacers simplify and reduce hub maintenance.  Spindle nut torque is no longer sensitive.  In fact, with spacers installed, you can tighten the spindle nut as much as you want without overtightening the bearings.  (We recommend 20-40 ft lbs.)  Bearings will run cooler and do not need to be repacked as often.

Bearing spacers are simple to install.  DRP Bearing Spacers have a threaded adjustment, allowing the user to quickly set bearing end play or preload.  A set-screw locks the spacer at the desired adjustment. Once installed, they do not need to be readjusted unless you replace the hub or bearings.

Bearing spacers are used in virtually every application in professional motorsports.

DRP Adjustable Bearing Spacers are covered under US Patent No 3,312,162.

DRP Bearing Spacers will only fit the “big pin spindle” found in 1970 and up Mustangs. Sold in Pairs
