By popular demand, we’ve re-engineered our MOD 1 coilover system for the Fairlane platform. This is a system that will perform on the street and track without the harshness of a typical coilover setup. Using our unique upper A-frame design and a custom-tuned JRi shock, we created the best possible front suspension system that doesn’t require any welding or extensive modifications to your car.

In our years of racing and testing our products on the track, we’ve learned quite a few things about building a suspension that handles well, but doesn’t break your back (or wallet). In essence, our understanding boils down to four key elements:

Geometry

Suspension geometry can make or break a suspension design. We’d encourage you to watch our video in the gallery above, but to put it simply, our design allows for a 50% improvement in shock/spring-to-wheel motion ratio. This results in a more responsive and agile shock, while allowing us to run a softer spring. This combination offers race-like agility, with comfortable, daily-driver street manners.

Shock Quality

JRi shocks are simply put, the best in the game. The modern mono-tube design ensure responsiveness and comfort. This is one area where we encourage people to spend as much as they’re comfortable with – the return on investment is huge. This kit comes with your choice of three custom setups (noted below).

Pivot Points

A suspension is only as good as the freedom of movement that it has. If your suspension is binding, it’s not performing. That why we engineered our own MOD Shaft kit with custom Delrin bushing instead of the more typical bearings. Why? Because the upper control arm only moves a fraction of a complete 360 degrees, we’ve seen upper arms actually dig divots into the bearings. So we went with a broader, central bearing surrounded by bushing to minimize wear and maximize serviceability. Servicing it requires no press or special tools (see video in the gallery).

Ball Joints

A good ball joint is absolutely essential. That’s why we replaced the old press-in style with a modern screw in ball joint. This gives you a ton of flexibility in deciding the type of ball joint you’d like to run, and it makes replacing it as easy as a trip to the parts store.

Our upper arms also include a built in 4 degrees of caster and replacement alignment keys, allowing you to dial in the alignment of your classic Mustang while improving baseline feel and highway tracking.

Our Fairlane MOD 1 Coilover Kit Includes:

  • Our Tubular Upper A-Frame Arms with MOD Shaft Kit
  • JRi-MOD coilover shocks with characteristics tuned by MMI
  • Hyperco springs
  • Billet aluminum shock top mounts
  • Hardware kit

Valving Options

The MOD1 STREET coilover package has a stripped down non-adjustable JRi shock. The valving in the shock is tailored toward a touring ride – responsive with a tight compliance to handle the bumps with control. This system best fits the person who wants to get in and drive. This shock package is completely upgradeable to a multi adjustable shock system in the future.

The MOD1 SPORT coilover assembly has a single-adjustable JRi shock which is set up to adjust rebound. The single adjustable shock allows us to be more aggressive. The valving allows the car to handle like a slot car for unsurpassed control while having the ability to back off the dampening quickly to get back a refined drive for the trip home from the track. This shock package is upgradeable to a double adjustable shock in the future.

The MOD1 RACE coilover assembly features a double adjustable JRi shock. This is the shock package used on Mike and Brianne’s Ol Blue 1966 Mustang. The double adjustable JRi shock system allows the driver to independently tune low speed rebound vs. high speed rebound. This lets us tune the small inputs of the steering wheel to get the response desired while tuning the larger bumps out of the equation. The double adjustable JRi shock package is the most advanced shock system you can buy to refine your Mustang to the level you demand.

Newly redesigned, the latest evolution of our Panhard Rod is now lighter, easier to run exhaust through, and offers improved serviceability.

The Falcon Panhard Rod helps lock down the side-to-side movement of the leaf springs, and allows for the driver to feel exactly when the rear of the car wants to break loose. During cornering, the leaf springs and bushings bear the side load of the chassis. This can flex the leaf springs up to 2” side to side giving a very unsettled feel during cornering (not to mention the potential tire rub). The MOD panhard rod kit takes this side-loading off the leaf springs and applies it to the panhard rod. Since there is no more side movement, you get immediate response to your inputs without waiting to see how the car might react.

By adjusting the panhard rod, you have the ability to further tune the rear roll center. This effectively allows for raising and lowering rear end grip when hard cornering. Pair this with a set of our leaf springs and a good shock, and you have an awesome, affordable setup that installs easily and performs excellently.

This kit includes

  • Bolt in axle bracket with shock mount

Don’t panhard rods move the axle side to side and isn’t that bad?

Yes, the shorter the panhard rod is, the more the axle is thrust side to side. This is why we make our panhard rods 35” long. The misalignment is roughly 1/8”. Considering the flex of the tire and the previous 2” movement, it becomes a non-issue.

Why did you choose to do a panhard rod vs. a Watts link?

Watts links are wonderful but we took into consideration multiple aspects when deciding on the panhard rods, including price, function, installation, exhaust, roll center height and tuning ability. When installing a Watts, it is difficult to mount it low enough. The lower the lateral controls device (Watts or panhard rod), the lower the roll center. The lower the roll center, the more the car can lean on the outer spring driving the tire into the ground. Manufacturing a Watts link also is a lot more costly. This does not help the budget for the rest of the car.

Chassis tuning is also a little simpler with the panhard rod. To raise and lower the roll center (panhard rod or Watts pivot) dictates how much leverage the chassis has on the outer springs. However, when raising and lowering the roll center, you want to keep the arms level. If the panhard rod or Watts arms are not level, they can input a jacking force into the chassis (not always the best thing). This can free up or tighten up the car upon steering input. The panhard rod is the easiest to keep level when adjusting.

Running exhaust is also easier with the panhard rod assembly. Making our lives easy is an important part of having a good time with our cars.

These disc brake pin spindles are crucial to your entire front end. Starting in 1970 Ford upgraded the spindle found on the V8 Mustang to a much beefier unit. This helped to better stabilize the larger cars and provide a stronger component. Fortunately these later spindles are easily adapted to Cougars with a set of 1969-1973 Mustang outer rods, spindle nuts and wheels bearing/races.

This provides a much stronger platform to build from, and is strongly recommended if you’ve made horsepower upgrades and are now looking to upgrade your brakes. Our Wilwood kits will mount directly on these, but you have to order the package for the 70-73 cars. Combined you’ll get a much stronger and more rigid design in a crucial area.

We prefer to use the disc brake spindle over the drum brake spindle. The disc brake allows the caliper to be mounted directly to the spindle, whereas the drum brake version requires an adapter.

We also strongly encourage the use of Pinto/Mustang II bearing spacers to help increase wheel spin and improve the longevity of your wheel bearings.

This spindle kit includes a pair of new forged disc spindles for your 67-70 Cougar.
