They said it couldn’t be done, so we did it anyways.

When you want the best rear suspension for your early Falcon, you go with the MOD 2 rear from MMI. Found under cars like MMI’s Ol’ Blue, Vaughn Gitten Jr.’s 70 Fastback, and even the 69 Anvil Mustang from The Fast & Furious 6, this suspension is built to win. So much so, that we had Falcon guys asking when it was going to arrive for their cars. Well, the wait it over.

Originally designed to cruise on the street then destroy at the track, this suspension has seen years of refinement and development. Comprised of several components, this kit most notably moves the coilover from under the body up into the trunk using a cantilever-type setup more typically found on Formula 1 cars. Not only is this generally badass, but it allows us to run a full size coilover without worrying about packaging it under the car.

We’ve also designed this package to be minimally invasive, requiring only a small amount of cutting (a couple inches) to your trunk floor and the boxing of about an inch of your rear frame rails on either side. Try that with any of those other kits on the market.

In short, this kit offers classic Falcon owners an incredibly balanced, strong, tune-able system that’s as comfortable on the street as it is on the track. We’ve installed this kit in countless cars and made several refinements over the years and it continues to be a defining suspension for us at MMI.

This built-to-order kit will be crafted to your desired specifications and needs. Please allow additional time for creation and shipping. Following your order, we will be in touch to confirm your specifics and details.

MOD 2 Rear Suspension Kit Includes:

  • MOD Rocker Cradle System with tune-able pushrods
  • JRi Coilovers (available in non-adjustible, single, double, or double with remote reservoir)
  • 9″ full floating rear end housing with solid 31 spline axles
  • MOD Panhard Rod Kit with MOD adjustable rear sway bar
  • MOD Subframe connectors
  • MOD Torque Arm with built in pinion angle adjustment
  • Adjustable lower control arm mounts
  • Adjustable lower control arms

MOD Rocker Cradle System with Tune-able Pushrods & JRi Shocks

The rocker cradle is the beating heart of our MOD 2 rear system. In trying to design a best-in-class rear suspension for an early Mustang we kept running into a problem: how do you fit a full-size coilover under the rear of the car while keeping ride height low? We didn’t want to compromise on the coilover size – that’s what delivers awesome ride quality around town, while also allowing us to get aggressive at the track. We wanted to be able to go over a set of railroad tracks with a coffee in our hand. Our solution came from the race car world. By attaching the rear housing to a pair of pushrods, then cantilevering them to our best-in-the-game JRi shocks mounted horizontally in the trunk, we were able to accomplish our goal all while creating a truly kickass looking system. Even better, the adjustable pushrods and trunk mounted coilovers give us easy access to dial in the rear suspension to a preferred feel or driving mode.

Ford 9″ Full Floating Housing with MOD Additions and Solid 31 Spline Axles

We needed a rear end setup that wouldn’t quit. Something we could beat on all day then drive home on. So we turned to an old favorite, the Ford 9″. But this isn’t your average 9″. Instead we opted to go with full floating axles for increased safety, strength, and easy repair. Your Speedway Engineering housing will come with the necessary tabs, brackets, caliper brackets, and brake lines holders already welded on. Though this kit does not include a differential, we’d recommend one of those available from GearFX.

MOD Panhard Rod Kit with Adjustable Rear Sway Bar

The Falcon Panhard Rod and Adjustable Rear Sway Bar helps lock down the lateral movement of the rear end, and allows for the driver to feel exactly when the rear of the car wants to break loose. Plus it gives us a way to adjust roll center in a package that’s easily tuned and installed, without having to resort to a full Watts link.

By including an adjustable rear sway bar, we’re getting the ability to further dial in the feel that we’re looking for. Adjusting the bar allows for finite tweaks to rear body roll and overall grip. The panhard rod gives you the ability to further tune the rear roll center. This effectively allows for raising and lowering rear end grip when hard cornering.

MOD Torque Arm with Adjustable Pinion Angle and MOD Subframe Connectors

Starting with a set of our MOD Falcon subframe connectors, we include a crossmember that acts as the front point for the torque arm setup. This beefy part keeps the rear end tied into the car, full improving the strength and feel. We connect the torque arm to the front of the rear diff with a plate and adjustable rods that allow you to dial in the exact driveline angle you’re after.

Brakes are not included with this kit, though we can pair a Wilwood kit with it.

Please note: these kits are made to order and per your specifications. Upon order we will contact you to confirm details and provide you an estimate build time. Shipping costs will be added to your order upon completion.

By combining MMI’s years of Mustang experience we have been able to design and manufacture a system for the Falcon that will perform on the street and track without the harshness of a typical coilover setup. Using our unique upper A-frame design and a custom-tuned JRi shock, we created the best possible front suspension system that doesn’t require any welding or extensive modifications to your car.

In our years of racing and testing our products on the track, we’ve learned quite a few things about building a suspension that handles well, but doesn’t break your back (or wallet). In essence, our understanding boils down to four key elements:

Geometry

Suspension geometry can make or break a suspension design. We’d encourage you to watch our video in the gallery above, but to put it simply, our design allows for a 50% improvement in shock/spring-to-wheel motion ratio. This results in a more responsive and agile shock, while allowing us to run a softer spring. This combination offers race-like agility, with comfortable, daily-driver street manners.

Shock Quality

JRi shocks are simply put, the best in the game. The modern mono-tube design ensure responsiveness and comfort. This is one area where we encourage people to spend as much as they’re comfortable with – the return on investment is huge. This kit comes with your choice of three custom setups (noted below).

Pivot Points

A suspension is only as good as the freedom of movement that it has. If your suspension is binding, it’s not performing. That why we engineered our own MOD Shaft kit with custom Delrin bushing instead of the more typical bearings. Why? Because the upper control arm only moves a fraction of a complete 360 degrees, we’ve seen upper arms actually dig divots into the bearings. So we went with a broader, central bearing surrounded by bushing to minimize wear and maximize serviceability. Servicing it requires no press or special tools (see video in the gallery).

Ball Joints

A good ball joint is absolutely essential. That’s why we replaced the old press-in style with a modern screw in ball joint. This gives you a ton of flexibility in deciding the type of ball joint you’d like to run, and it makes replacing it as easy as a trip to the parts store.

Our upper arms also include a built in 4 degrees of caster and replacement alignment keys, allowing you to dial in the alignment of your classic Mustang while improving baseline feel and highway tracking.

Our Falcon MOD 1 Coilover Kit Includes:

  • Our Tubular Upper A-Frame Arms with MOD Shaft Kit
  • JRi-MOD coilover shocks with characteristics tuned by MMI
  • Hyperco springs
  • Billet aluminum shock top mounts
  • Hardware kit

Valving Options

The MOD1 STREET coilover package has a stripped down non-adjustable JRi shock. The valving in the shock is tailored toward a touring ride – responsive with a tight compliance to handle the bumps with control. This system best fits the person who wants to get in and drive. This shock package is completely upgradeable to a multi adjustable shock system in the future.

The MOD1 SPORT coilover assembly has a single-adjustable JRi shock which is set up to adjust rebound. The single adjustable shock allows us to be more aggressive. The valving allows the car to handle like a slot car for unsurpassed control while having the ability to back off the dampening quickly to get back a refined drive for the trip home from the track. This shock package is upgradeable to a double adjustable shock in the future.

The MOD1 RACE coilover assembly features a double adjustable JRi shock. This is the shock package used on Mike and Brianne’s Ol Blue 1966 Mustang. The double adjustable JRi shock system allows the driver to independently tune low speed rebound vs. high speed rebound. This lets us tune the small inputs of the steering wheel to get the response desired while tuning the larger bumps out of the equation. The double adjustable JRi shock package is the most advanced shock system you can buy to refine your Mustang to the level you demand.

It's the combination of parts that we've beat on weekend after weekend at events like Optima, Goodguys, GridLife, and too many track days to count. We've spent more than a decade developing, designing, and refining this package.

APEX PACKAGE

This Takes a Special Kind of Crazy

FRONT SUSPENSION

We start the Apex setup with our MOD 2 Front Suspension Kit.

Make no mistake, the install is involved, but the improved performance is worth it. We start by removing the original shock towers and replacing them with our MOD 2 designs built to create maximum space in the engine bay while maintaining the strength Ford designers originally intended. Constructed out of thicker gauge metal than similar kits, these are designed to keep the shock mounted much higher (and closer to the original location) to enhance overall shock travel, resulting in better suspension geometry and performance.

We then replace the lower control arm mount with a new design that locates it in the most effective position and helps to tie the rest of the kit together. As fans of adjustability, we installed our keyed mounting points, offering you the ability to raise or lower the mount for the lower control arm resulting in improved alignment specs. Keeping the longest control arms possible combined with vertical control arm mounting adjustability ensures that you will have the best combination possible. Of course we built in our preferred JRi Racing shocks (with your choice of adjustability and Hyperco springs.

Tying the shock towers and lower control arm mounts together you’ll find a tubular crossmember designed to clear a front sump Coyote oil pan like those from Canton or Moroso.

REAR SUSPENSION

In short, this kit offers classic Mustang owners an incredibly balanced, strong, tune-able system that’s as comfortable on the street as it is on the track. We’ve installed this kit in countless cars and made several refinements over the years and it continues to be a defining suspension for us at MMI.

POWER STEERING

If you’ve ever tried parking one of these cars without power steering, you know just how essential it is. But finding the right combination of pieces is a daunting task. Our focus started with the proper steering geometry, a bunch of math that helps tell us engineers how natural the steering is going to feel. After all, it shouldn’t take 13 turns of the wheel to turn a corner, nor should it take half a turn to make a u-turn.

So we start by replacing the steering box with a high quality ABS unit with a 14:1 ratio. We back that up with a KRC Power Steering pump, the likes of which can be found on everything from street rods to race cars. From there we source quality replacement components: center link, tie rod adjusters, and inner and outer tie rods. Again, focusing on the best stock replacements we can find, not the ones from the discount bin.

So why not go with a typical rack-and-pinion type setup so common these days? It all has to do with steering geometry, or the math behind why your car feels twitchy and unpredictable instead of solid and confidence inspiring. Unfortunately, feel often takes a backseat to packaging constraints (and consumers who say “I want that” without really being sure why). What everyone seems to be missing is that most rack and pinion systems actually make the original steering geometry worse. If you’re looking to drop a Coyote in, we offer a Coyote specific pump and reservoir that’s works extremely well with this setup.

    • MOD 1 Power Steering Kit (Engine Specific)
    • Replacement Centerlink
    • Replacement Tie Rod Adjusters
    • Replacement Tie Rods (Inner and Outer)

BRAKES

For brakes we start with our MOD 1 Front Brake Kit and add on our MOD 2 Rear Brake kit. Up front you’ll get a pair of 6 piston Wilwood Superlite 6 calipers over massive rotors (18″ wheels highly suggested). Of course we’ll want to mount those wheels on a set of our big pin spindles for improved strength and so that we can include a set of DRP Bearing Spacers.

With our setup in the back offering a full floating rear end, we’re able to run a Dynapro 6 caliper and rotor setup. Furthermore we’ll weld on the necessary brackets on your housing, then run brake hard lines to meet the stainless flexible lines for you. That means your rear end comes with all the necessary hardware to plumb and install it, saving you the guesswork and time.

This package is our most involved install, but it can be done on a painted car. If you are not comfortable welding, fabricating, and working on your own brakes, we’d highly recommend you leave this to the professionals.

You will need to remove your stock shock towers and weld in our replacements. You’ll be doing a fair amount of welding, but fortunately the shock towers and small section of the rear floor are all that will need to be cut. Brackets are welded to both the front and rear frame rails that act as mounting points for various parts of the suspension.

Also of note…

First, we don’t currently offer a shock tower brace to complement our MOD 2 Front Suspension. Frankly we’ve seen so many unique engine options installed that we haven’t had a big enough sample size to create an off-the-shelf piece. However, this is on our radar.

Second, we don’t currently offer any header options. MOD 2 is designed to offer a fair amount of room, but those Coyote engines are big, especially in the 64-66 engine bay. Custom headers will need to be fabricated for that application and likely for others as well.

Third, this package does not include a rear diff as standard, but it is an option. We’d recommend the N-Series from GearFX.

FRONT SUSPENSION

Up front we call in our MOD 1 Front Suspension Kit, a complete kit that replaces the stock upper and lower control arms, strut rods, shocks, sway bar, and bushings but doesn’t reengineer it. Look, Ford was on the right track with the original design, but it’s been 50 years and we’ve learned a lot.

For instance, caster. Caster is essentially the alignment angle of the upper and lower balljoint (it’s more complicated than that, but let’s keep things simple). In the 60s no one thought it was that important, so they set up a degree or two. Today, we know that the sweet spot is 6-7 degrees to minimize darting on the highway and improve high speed stability. That’s why we’ve engineered our upper arms to be offset, increasing base caster to fit in with our modern demands.

On the camber front, we offer a redesigned lower control arm with an adjustable heim joint. This allows you to easily dial in your preferred camber while also giving us a new way to attached our solid mount strut rods (which are also adjustable).

Are you sensing a trend here? The goal with our MOD 1 Front Suspension is to not only improve everything about the front of the car, but also to give you a level of adjustability that the old suspension simply could not offer. Combine this with an alignment from a shop that actually knows what they’re doing and you’ll feel a tighter, more responsive front end that’s point and shoot.

REAR SUSPENSION

Most of this kit can be installed in a garage with typical hand tools. Many of the parts are fairly easier to swap in and out. Some, like the steering, will require you to remove other parts before accessing the ones to be replaced. We recommend professional installation if you are uncomfortable with the idea of replacing your brakes and steering systems.

Welding will be required to install the MOD 2 rear (both brackets and the panhard bar bracket) plus the subframe connectors.

This package will require the adaptation of your current brake lines to your new master cylinder.

Be VERY careful when removing and installing new springs. They hurt, ask us how we know.

The Ultimate In Early Mustang Front Suspension

If you’re looking for the ultimate front suspension for your early Mustang, this is it. By completely redesigning the front suspension from the ground up, we’ve been able to extract modern-day performance and ride quality while accommodating larger power plants like the 2011+ Coyote (or even a NASCAR engine if that’s your thing).

This is the same suspension you’ll find under the front of Mike Maier’s Ol’ Blue, the shop’s development car and winner of everything from Optima to Goodguys. Designed for the track yet comfortable on the street, this suspension has been refined and improved to create a no-compromise option for those who want only the best.

As for steering, the kit is designed to use your stock steering box along with our MOD centerlink. If you wish to upgrade to power steering, we can make that happen by adding on our power steering kit. If you’re looking to drop a Coyote in, we offer a Coyote specific pump and reservoir that’s works extremely well with this setup.

The Complete MOD 2 Front Suspension Kit Includes:

  • MOD 2 Shock Towers
  • MOD 2 Lower Control Arm & Engine Mounts
  • MOD 2 Crossmember
  • MOD 2 Upper Control Arms
  • MOD 2 Lower Control Arms
  • MOD 2 Adjustable Strut Rods
  • MOD 2 Centerlink (with tie rods, & bump steer adjuster stud)
  • JRi Shocks (non-adjustable, single, or double)
  • Hyperco Springs
  • Hardware & Alignment Keys

To complete the front suspension, we also highly recommend our front sway bar and a set of big pin spindles. Or if you’re really ready to commit, our Apex Package has everything you need.

Please note: these kits are made to order and per your specifications. Upon order we will contact you to confirm details and provide you an estimate build time. Shipping costs will be added to your order upon completion.

This is it, the mack daddy

When you want the best rear suspension for your early Mustang, you go with the MOD 2 rear from MMI. Found under cars like MMI’s Ol’ Blue, Vaughn Gitten Jr.’s 70 Fastback, and even the 69 Anvil Mustang from The Fast & Furious 6, this suspension is built to win.

In short, this kit offers classic Mustang owners an incredibly balanced, strong, tune-able system that’s as comfortable on the street as it is on the track. We’ve installed this kit in countless cars and made several refinements over the years and it continues to be a defining suspension for us at MMI.

  • Updated MOD Panhard Rod Kit with MOD adjustable rear sway bar

The Mustang Panhard Rod  and Adjustable Rear Sway Bar helps lock down the lateral movement of the rear end, and allows for the driver to feel exactly when the rear of the car wants to break loose.

Starting with a set of our MOD subframe connectors, we include a crossmember that acts as the front point for the torque arm setup.

If you’re looking for the full package, check out both our Corkscrew and Apex Packages.

Please note: these kits are made to order and per your specifications. Upon order we will contact you to confirm details and provide you an estimate build time. Shipping costs will be added to your order upon completion.

Built to Handle Whatever You Throw At It

Meet our MOD 1 Front Suspension Package, the complete, do anything kit designed and built by the team at MMI.

By combining MMI’s years of Mustang experience we have been able to design and manufacture a system will perform on the street and track without the harshness of a typical coilover setup. Using our unique upper A-frame design and a custom-tuned JRi shock, we created the best possible front suspension system that doesn’t require any welding or extensive modification to car.

The kit combines our popular MOD 1 Coilover Kit, MOD Lower Control Arms and Adjustable Strut Rod, and the MOD Front Sway Bar. This will completely replace the front suspension on your early model Mustang. Not only will this improve your on track times, but it will transform how your car handles on the street and at highway speeds, delivering a confident and consistent feel.

This kit includes

In our years of racing and testing our products on the track, we’ve learned quite a few things about building a suspension that handles well, but doesn’t break your back (or wallet). In essence, our understanding boils down to four key elements:

Geometry

Suspension geometry can make or break a suspension design. We’d encourage you to watch our video in the gallery above, but to put it simply, our design allows for a 50% improvement in shock/spring to wheel motion ratio.

Servicing it requires no press or special tools (see video).

Ball Joints

A good ball joint is absolutely essential. That’s why we replaced the old press-in style with a modern screw in ball joint. This gives you a ton of flexibility in deciding the type of ball joint you’d like to run, and it makes replacing it as easy as a trip to the parts store.

Our upper arms also include a built in 4 degrees of caster and replacement alignment keys, allowing you to dial in the alignment of your classic Mustang.

Shock Valving Options
