An upgrade from our MOD kit, the MOD 1 Complete Brake Kit brings enhanced on-track capabilities to your Mustang. We swap the Dynapro Caliper for its bigger brother, the Wilwood Superlite 6R which delivers improved cooling and a larger brake area for reliable performance both on and off the track and include Wilwood’s D154 Rear Calipers for four corner disc braking.

FNSL6R billet Forged six-piston calipers with 13”-14” rotors deliver the ultimate combination for braking power and style in this group of kits engineered for traditional non-ABS spindles on American muscle cars and vintage rods. Built exclusively for 17” and larger wheels, SL6 kits enhance tire and suspension upgrades on all types of custom show and high performance dual-purpose street and track machines. A full range of options for caliper finishes and rotor designs are guaranteed to catch the eye of the most discriminating enthusiast while providing optimized brake performance for every individual application.

Though we’re big fans of drum brakes in the rear, we understand that rear discs brings some advantages, especially in track scenarios. But there’s a reason we like the stock brakes: the rear axle flexes. It flexes a lot. I don’t care if you have a Currie unit from a Sherman tank, the rear axles will flex. This has the effect of pushing the rotors (which are mounted to the axles) around within the caliper. So instead of having the pads gently riding the rotor, there’s a gap. This gap has to be filled when pushing the brake, which makes the whole system feel inconsistent and scary.

So what do guys do? They buy a bigger master (which moves more fluid at a lower pressure, resulting in even worse brake feel), they back it up with a brake booster (don’t get me started) and then they start asking about firewall reinforcements because they have to put so much effort into the brake pedal.

We want to use discs in the rear, so how do we overcome this problem? We opt for a floating caliper like the one found in the Wilwood D154 setup. The floating caliper effectively moves with the rear, minimizing the air gap that’s naturally created. Frankly, it’s the only rear setup we really like.

Wilwood’s D154 Rear Caliper Kit offers a direct bolt-on 2-piston replacement with a floating caliper design, helping to minimize pad knock back and improve brake feel. Forged billet aluminum bodies, stainless steel pistons, and competition style high-temperature seals put an end to the rust, bore pitting, and seal failures that plague the OE caliper design. D154 calipers provide low-maintenance performance and a huge weight savings with high temperature reliability for the street and track. D52 calipers mount in the stock location over stock rotors; use the original style OE D154 brake pads and an OE M10-1.5 banjo bolt brake line mounting. Calipers can be used with most wheels that clear the OE calipers.

We also include a set of our big pin spindles in this kit. It’s a worthwhile upgrade that helps to ensure a solid foundation for your new braking system. This kit comes with DRP Hub Bearing Spacers as well, a small but significant addition.

For pads, we include Wilwood’s BP-20, which provides increased friction levels with extended temperature range over BP-10. BP-20 has a progressive response rate as pedal pressure and temperatures increase to provide confident, repeated stops and outstanding modulation characteristics. The unique metallic composite formulation provides an aggressive feel without the harsh noise, high rotor abrasion, and extreme dust levels associated with high metallic based compounds.

Designed with simplicity in mind, our MOD 1 Rear Suspension Kit brings together all the essential elements of a well controlled rear suspension to your ride. The feel is sporty, but not punishing: our goal has always been to instill confidence and responsiveness whether your preferred parking lot is filled with cones or grocery getters.

Our complete kit includes new performance tuned MOD 165# leaf springs, our panhard rod kit with an optional rear sway bar for adjustability, Bilstein performance shocks, all new bushings, shackles, and U-Bolts. Add a set of lowering blocks to help bring the rear down and dial in the stance. These pieces are all designed to help keep the rear planted and stable, while offering you the flexibility to dial in the feel you’re looking for on those weekend autocross or track events.

Installation wise, we’ve aimed for a package that is minimally invasive. The only required welding is the panhard rod bracket, the rest are bolt in parts. Some changes may be required to your exhaust if you have an over-the-axle setup. No cutting up floor pans, changing mounting points, or even welding to your rear axle. This kit is designed to perform without making massive changes without having to cut up your car and works with both 8″ and 9″ rear ends.

If you’re looking to upgrade the shock to an even better option, this kit is available with JRi Shocks.

The MOD 1 Rear Suspension Kit Includes

By combining MMI’s years of Mustang experience we have been able to design and manufacture a system that will perform on the street and track without the harshness of a typical coilover setup. Using our unique upper A-frame design and a custom-tuned JRi shock, we created the best possible front suspension system that doesn’t require any welding or extensive modifications to your car.

In our years of racing and testing our products on the track, we’ve learned quite a few things about building a suspension that handles well, but doesn’t break your back (or wallet). In essence, our understanding boils down to four key elements:

Geometry

Suspension geometry can make or break a suspension design. We’d encourage you to watch our video in the gallery above, but to put it simply, our design allows for a 50% improvement in shock/spring-to-wheel motion ratio. This results in a more responsive and agile shock, while allowing us to run a softer spring. This combination offers race-like agility, with comfortable, daily-driver street manners.

Shock Quality

JRi shocks are simply put, the best in the game. The modern mono-tube design ensure responsiveness and comfort. This is one area where we encourage people to spend as much as they’re comfortable with – the return on investment is huge. This kit comes with your choice of three custom setups (noted below).

Pivot Points

A suspension is only as good as the freedom of movement that it has. If your suspension is binding, it’s not performing. That why we engineered our own MOD Shaft kit with custom Delrin bushing instead of the more typical bearings. Why? Because the upper control arm only moves a fraction of a complete 360 degrees, we’ve seen upper arms actually dig divots into the bearings. So we went with a broader, central bearing surrounded by bushing to minimize wear and maximize serviceability. Servicing it requires no press or special tools (see video in the gallery).

Ball Joints

A good ball joint is absolutely essential. That’s why we replaced the old press-in style with a modern screw in ball joint. This gives you a ton of flexibility in deciding the type of ball joint you’d like to run, and it makes replacing it as easy as a trip to the parts store.

Our upper arms also include a built in 4 degrees of caster and replacement alignment keys, allowing you to dial in the alignment of your classic Mustang while improving baseline feel and highway tracking.

Our Mustang MOD 1 Coilover Kit Includes:

  • Our Tubular Upper A-Frame Arms with MOD Shaft Kit
  • JRi-MOD coilover shocks with characteristics tuned by MMI
  • Hyperco springs
  • Billet aluminum shock top mounts
  • Hardware kit

Valving Options

The MOD1 STREET coilover package has a stripped down non-adjustable JRi shock. The valving in the shock is tailored toward a touring ride – responsive with a tight compliance to handle the bumps with control. This system best fits the person who wants to get in and drive. This shock package is completely upgradeable to a multi adjustable shock system in the future.

The MOD1 SPORT coilover assembly has a single-adjustable JRi shock which is set up to adjust rebound. The single adjustable shock allows us to be more aggressive. The valving allows the car to handle like a slot car for unsurpassed control while having the ability to back off the dampening quickly to get back a refined drive for the trip home from the track. This shock package is upgradeable to a double adjustable shock in the future.

The MOD1 RACE coilover assembly features a double adjustable JRi shock. This is the shock package used on Mike and Brianne’s Ol Blue 1966 Mustang. The double adjustable JRi shock system allows the driver to independently tune low speed rebound vs. high speed rebound. This lets us tune the small inputs of the steering wheel to get the response desired while tuning the larger bumps out of the equation. The double adjustable JRi shock package is the most advanced shock system you can buy to refine your Mustang to the level you demand.
